Voters Renew Okaloosa Half-Cent Sales Tax for 10 More Years

Okaloosa County voters approved continuing the countywide half-cent sales surtax for 10 years beginning Jan. 1, 2029, with 68.84% voting in favor, according to unofficial results.

The “Save Okaloosa’s Future” referendum passed 52,040 to 23,554, or 68.84% to 31.16%, according to unofficial results from the Okaloosa County Supervisor of Elections.

The measure continues an existing half-cent sales surtax on taxable transactions countywide. The renewal takes effect Jan. 1, 2029, and runs for 10 years.

According to the ballot language, the money may fund law enforcement and public safety facilities; land acquisition; traffic congestion relief; construction and repair of roads, bridges and sidewalks; flood control and water quality improvements; associated equipment; other public facility improvements; and debt payments. Spending is subject to oversight by a citizens’ committee.

The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners placed the measure on the ballot.

Results are unofficial until certified by the county canvassing board.
