Mary Esther and Holt Fire District Measures Pass, Valparaiso Charter Change Fails

Voters approved a Mary Esther charter change moving city elections to November and new Holt Fire District impact fee rates, while Valparaiso voters rejected removing a residency requirement for appointed city officials, according to unofficial results.

Three local measures appeared on ballots in parts of Okaloosa County. Results are from the Okaloosa County Supervisor of Elections and are unofficial until certified.

Mary Esther: passed. Voters approved amending the city charter to move mayor and city council elections to coincide with the November statewide general election in even years. The measure passed 1,192 to 182 (86.75% to 13.25%).

Valparaiso: failed. The charter change would have removed the requirement that appointed officers (City Clerk, Tax Assessor, Tax Collector, Treasurer, Municipal Judge and Chief of Police) live within city limits for six months before appointment, while keeping the requirement for the Mayor and City Commissioners. It failed 741 to 1,037 (41.68% yes to 58.32% no).

Holt Fire District: passed. Voters approved revised fire impact fee rates on new construction, effective Oct. 1, 2027: $1.00 per square foot of heated and cooled area for new residential construction and $2.00 per square foot of gross floor area for new non-residential construction. It passed 660 to 445 (59.73% to 40.27%).
